Is Lawn Care Tax Deductible?
Did you know that professional lawn care services may be tax-deductible if your property is being used to bring in rental income or is used as a home office? Read on as we break down the behind-the-scenes regarding lawn care and tax deductions and what you may or may not be able to claim.
Residential Lawn Care
Unfortunately, residential lawn care is not tax-deductible. Personal expenses are generally taxable because the government deducts personal relief from the total tax due. This means you can only deduct the sum of money you spend to care for your lawn if you use your property to bring in rental income or as a home office. According to the IRS guidelines, your lawn needs to be “useful in business operations.”
Suppose you own your own company and conduct business from the confines of your own home. In that case, you may be able to deduct part of the cost of landscaping your property. Should the IRS decide to make random visits to your home, you should be able to prove that you use your home for business activity. What exactly is deductible? The amount is based on the percentage of the house used for business. The court also allows a deduction for part of the costs of lawn care and driveway repairs.
Every dollar you put into your rental property for maintenance, repair, or capital improvements, is considered business expenses and eligible for a tax deduction. This includes lawn maintenance, mowing, trimming, weeding, and landscaping. Therefore, keep all receipts for materials, rental equipment, and labor costs.
If you think you might be eligible for a tax deduction on your lawn care expenses, check out the IRS website’s Credits & Deductions page.
