Anne Arundel, Howard, Montgomery, Calvert Counties: Sod Webworms

Sod webworms...well ominous name...but just what are these things? First: a rarity, these guys are Native American! Unbelievable, very hard to imagine our very own insect problem!!

Sod Webworms

Just what signs can be seen for the webworm. Well they end up as tiny gray moths. You can see the moths flying about on your lawn around dusk. These moths have an elongated snout and are small (around ½").

The worm stage is the stage the worms actually feed on the crown of the grass. The roots are not eaten and with time the grass mostly likely will recover in the fall. However, the unsightly round patches in the lawn are signs of the damage. Sometimes the patches are the size of a baseball or larger. If you look closely you may see holes in the sod/turf: these holes are from birds looking for the worms as a food source. If you notice a large number of birds on the lawn poking into the turf you probably have an infestation of sod webworms and grubs.

Are there treatments? Yes, sprays done in the late afternoon are quite effective NOW. In about four weeks the sprays will not be as effective. The process for elimination of grubs and sod webworms is the same. Now is the time to combat the webworm and the grubs. Grubs turn into beetles and the beetles will be out very soon. If you reside in Anne Arundel, Howard, Calvert, Montgomery or Prince Georges counties: contact us for the appropriate treatment for sod web worms.
