Company History

The roots of Blades of Green go back to when, Mark, the founder was in junior high school (nowadays called middle school). Having a very strong entrepreneurial drive Mark began his life-long career by mowing lawns. Mark purchased his first truck after the family had moved to Harwood. Working for Tilden Lawn in Davidsonville and while maintaining his years at Southern High School he decided to go to the University of Maryland and study turf management and perhaps make a change. Then in 1989 mark re- focused his company adopting the current name of Blades of Green and as a result sold the mowing part of the growing enterprise and embarking on the lawn care aspect of turf management. Growth was steady from a beginning of under 100 customers. Working very hard and expanding into landscape design and installation Mark was joined by friends from high school and then his brother, Brad, in 1999.

Moving forward Blades of Green now has three components: landscape installation, lawn care and pest control. Brad is now fully responsible for and developer of the Pest Control division. Both of the divisions, lawn care and pest control are vibrant and are quickly gaining a large client base.

As the future looms, the brothers Mark and Brad are using the expertise they have and are developing the internet component of the business. Having recently merging with Neal Blackwell and his company Blackwell Pest Control, Blades of Green is on an ambitious path towards a full service company now offering services in nine counties in Maryland. Hard work and excellent customer service are the hallmarks of the company and will continue to be the core of the development of Blades of Green.

Having started as a mowing one-person organization, Mark Leahy has seen it grow to 25 employees with plans to open regional offices, especially on Maryland's Eastern shore. Many of the clients have been with us since 1989 or earlier. Community work has become increasingly important to the company, particularly involvement in local schools. Mark and other Blades of Green employees can be found distributing Dictionaries to the third graders at Lothian Elementary every fall. Financial support has been extended to the Summit School, AAMC, Calverton School, Edgewater Elementary and other schools. A strong belief in literacy as a key to one's future has led to a company commitment to the local Rotary Club, South Anne Arundel Rotary. The company has participated in many of the charitable activities of the Rotary club for nearly 6 years.

Blades of Green in the Community

As the company has grown, we have made a commitment to charities in our area. We work with the Summit school in Edgewater providing our service contracts to the annual Silent Auction. One of the very worthwhile projects has been the support of the local South Anne Arundel Rotary club with the contribution of and distribution of dictionaries for all of the third graders in South Anne Arundel County.

Literacy is additionally supported through the annual opportunity for students in all of the schools in South Anne Arundel County to participate in a multi media contest devoted to the ideals of Rotary International.

Very recently, this past fall, BOG became a corporate sponsor for Rotary in the Bountiful Backpacks Project. Meals are provided on a weekly basis for students to take home. Currently there are 60 families benefiting from the program in South County. We support other schools including Spaulding and Calverton. Plans are under way to help at our two local high schools.
